We seem to be in the centre of a Zombie craze, helped by the likes of Night of a Million Billion Zombies and Left for Dead. Nation Red tries to capitalize on that craze and it does it in its own unique way. Sure the game is actually just a basic 3rd person shooter, but somehow it manages to create an illusion of something much grander.
Developed by the relatively unknown studio DiezelPower, the game screams with classic arcade shooter quality. Nation Red is built around the simplest idea, kill zombies – get new weapons – kill even more zombies. Nation Red does not try to hide its basic gameplay elements but rather takes on the genre in its own unique way, building from ideas that the classic of the genre provide.
Nation Red has a great range of weapons to use, with each being dropped randomly by Zombies that you have killed. This in itself gives the game some strategy as the drops tend to happen in big hordes of Zombies, so getting to the weapon drop that you want becomes a hard task itself, lending itself to some creative gameplay styles.
shot2Some of the weapons include flame thrower, chainsaw, magnum and of course, an axe. All together there are a great range and number of weapons, which can be increased in ability as you kill more zombies. As you kill zombies you're given a form of XP, this then can be spent on gathering additions that last for a short while, for example you can increase the rate of fire for whatever gun you're using, or you could instead use a large attack function. These additions are of great help when you're being cornered and are facing an untimely death.
There are a total of four game modes, Quest mode which is a set of 18 different levels which you have to survive, intermixed with a few boss characters. Survival is about one thing and one thing alone, survive as long as you can and kill as much as you can. You also have Rush, which is somewhat like survival except you only a have a machine gun to kill with. Finally there is Blood Drive, which is all about getting the bloodiest kills.
Graphically speaking Nation Red is quite impressive, although you don't have too much control over the camera, the game is true 3D and has a gritty realistic feel to it. The studio could have taken the quick route and done some comical zombie graphics to make the game feel even more casual, but it works out well.
Audio is on par with the graphics with some generic but never-the-less great sounding tracks to listen to while playing, and some high quality sound effects. shot3
But it's not all great news, when I first tested the game out I maxed all settings and gave that a try, with the disappointing result of corrupted graphics when using Anti-Aliasing. Turning of AA solved this problem, but it's not the best solution in the world. This issue affects quite a few people, so hopefully it's one that we will see getting fixed by the studio.
Nation Red feels like it's crying out for some online team based action or even just death match, but alas Nation Red is completely devoid of any multiplayer. Without it I can't help but think it will be cast into the depths of indie gaming history.
